What gets me in this article is the quote “I remember one lady dancing, and another lady lap dancing, and I believe that’s when the oral sex took place,”
I believe????
there are two possiblities… one – he has oral sex so often that he doesn’t think anything of it when it happens or, two, it wasn’t that good.
Comments:
“The pole dancing was spot on. However, the oral sex could have been more memorable. Oh, and what was that thing with the slinky? That was just weird.”
There are so many holes in his argument that it seems like a heap of nonsense to me.
I can understand why someone would be against gay marriage based on their religeous beliefs. In fact, I think the major bone of contention with offended parties is that they see the the government as redefining a sacred religious tradition. I know that in the Catholic church for instance, marraige is one of the sacrements. So in my opinion, government shouldn’t be dealing in marrages, but in civil unions for all.
As far as objections to gay couples given legal protections, I say get over it. People are going to couple as they see fit, with or without legal protection. It’s legal for people to drink and gamble in this country even though it is objectionable to some religions. As such religious objections alone shouldn’t be a basis of government law, especially when it concerns the conduct between consenting adults.
ditto, that Card stuff has been on the Seattle Stranger’s (a weekly mag here) online blog. They kept saying “Orson Scott Card is a hateful homophobe” so google will catch on.
“Not to belabor the obvious, but old people can’t produce offspring either. Which raises the question, since Scott Card’s wife is probably post-menopausal, should she and Card be executed, or just forcibly divorced from each other?”
I had no idea about O.S. Card. I’ve actually only read the first in his 8,000-book Ender’s Game series.
I also had no idea until recently that A.C. Clarke was a pedophile.
wtf?!?!?!
Next, someone is going to tell me that Heinlein was a chauvinist —
Or that Harlan Ellison can get cranky.
I have been worried about O.S. Card’s crap for a long time. “Worried” = sickened by. I had to stop, for the most part, listening to my favorite Browncoat podcasts because he is such a hero in those circles.
I learned a long time ago not to hero worship. I went to hear one of my favorite authors (Rudolfo Anaya) give a talk at my undergrad college, and he was a giant sphincter. He appeared, actually, to hate women. Since then, I don’t need to know the personalities of the authors I enjoy.
However, when I find out an author that everyone is telling me to read thinks that I am sub-human, I tend to steer clear. By the same token, when I find out a really cool person writes books, I buy them.
I do, however, have my limits on what I can know about the author while still allowing myself to enjoy his/her work. I’ve had this very conversation with a group of my feminist friends, and I always end up with the same decision: that there are way too many books out there to read for me to spend my $$ on Card’s given what I know about him as a person.

I’m holding here a book
Notable, but not the greatest
Stolen for me by the latest
In a long line of thieves
And I’m just about to drop it
Down that manhole of memories
When I realize it doesn’t bother me
Like love’s mementos usually do
And I look up to see who’s different here
The latest me or the latest you
Course, you’re the kind of guy who doesn’t lie
He just doctors everything
Chooses some unassuming finger
And quietly moves his wedding ring
Who rewrites his autobiography
For any pretty girl who’ll sing
But you can’t fool the queen, baby
Cuz I married the king
And maybe it was I who betrayed his majesty
With no opposite reality
Like a puddle with no reflection
Of the sky or the trees
But after my dreaded beheading
I tied that sucker back on with a string
And I guess I’m pretty different now
Considering
I kissed you on the street that night
On the far side of four
But I didn’t like the taste
In my mouth or yours
And ignoring the persona you wore for my benefit
For once I had the balls to call it
Just call it
But a lesson must be lived
In order to be learned
And the clarity to see and stop this now
That is what I’ve earned
