Rhet – no fair. you snuck up on me. Given a few hours I could have done something clever. Given a few days I could have gotten distracted by other things and never gotten around to it, thus letting us avoid this whole unpleasant incident. ;)
So I got to see the season opener of “Mad Men” last night. I WON’T give any spoilers here but I will say I didn’t think it was their strongest effort. Still, I was left wanting to see more so I guess they met their objective.
I’m just not sure that if it had been my first viewing of the show, it would have been enough to hook me.
Hmmmm ….
Maybe it’s like any long term relationship where the spark has cooled.
You hang in there because you know it. It’s familure, you have it’s back story, moving on means finding something else … and your always holding out hope that what once attracted you so much to it will return.
EssBee – Yep. Although … I think I would go the “individual track” route with her. (wow is THAT open for inturpretation!).
I’m not so sure her voice holds up without the techno-mix effects.
Still, give “control” a listen when your in that sort of mood. Use headphones. mmmmmmm
Yes, I could feel the LA-area earthquake today. I was in the kitchen, helping my mom pack stuff. It surprised us all, and it went on for a long time, too – between 10 and 20 seconds, I think. Cheesy concerts? hmmmm
I though an early 90′s Bruce Springstein concert I saw was pretty cheesy.
I’m pretty sure I may have seen “Huey Lewis and the News” in concert in the late 80s or early 90s. Since I can’t remember the concert … I must have had a great time but I can’t imagine that wasn’t cheesy.
Figures JJ and TSH would come in this week and bomb their nipples all over the board. Makes me glad I forgot to send in a guess for this week as I would have just embarrassed myself.
RE: Alzheimer’s
There was an interesting “NOVA science Now” segment on recently in which they showed that what was probably happening with memory loss was NOT actual loss of memory but destruction of the neural pathways used to access the memories.
The REALLY neat part was that they showed that the brain could reestablish those connections itself (over time) simply by placing the subject in an environment where it had fun and stimulating social interaction.
This was shown with rats of course but they pointed out that this is something family members of elderly people have anecdotally claimed for some time.
They are currently working on medicine to trick the brain into producing the same chemicals it generates when you are hanging out with your best mates … however it seems to me that this is as good a justification as any for just having fun with your friends!
Ok, going way back in the comments, did a vanity search on my full name and got only 96 hits (not many people around with my name :) ), mostly World Fantasy stuff comes up, although there are a few things on various other Sci Fi cons I’ve worked on as well as other things.
TEB – :P
The episode is complete. Comes in at 37.5 minutes.
I had some fun with your clip you sent in.
You will hear in the show… :D (Hoping you don’t mind)
Srsly!
CP: Policy of Truth – Depeche Mode
Congrats on the loss of the double mortgage TSHs!!!
CP: Si è spento il sole — Adriano Celentano
Welcome, Brad!
Congrats, TSH!
Wndr, just do what you enjoy. That’s really the important thing.
CP: Old Mr. Heffer – 4 Non Blondes
Actually, that should have been CPIMM: “Currently playing in my mind”
JJ inspired me with his CP: LOL
Although technically, my wife bought that cassette when it came out.
And now it’s CPIMM. Thank you very much.
I knew there was a reason I didn’t eat at McDonalds!
http://failblog.org/2008/07/29/mcfail-2/
CPIMM: Final Countdown – Europe
Ha! “Over 1 billion served” takes on a new meaning w/ that one, ditto.
wolf, that’s even worse! Take this one:
CPIMM: Because The Night (unplugged) – 10,000 Maniacs
Ha ha – I am the master of the ear worm…
CPIMM: Turn Up (the Radio) – Autograph
CP: Promises In The Dark – Pat Benatar
LOL
CP: Love On The Run – Galactic
CP: Down Boys – Warrant
(not really. Just trying to remember the worst possible crappy 80s rock song)
I saw Warrant live once. They opened for Motley Crue at McNichols arena in Denver. Lord have mercy, that was like 400 years ago.
CP: Hide and Seek – The Brian Jonestown Massacre
CPIMM: Nobody’s Fool – Cinderella
CP: Don’t Ease Me In – Grateful Dead
CPIMM: Rock you Like a Hurricane – Scorpions
CPIMM: Round and Round – RaTT
Ack make it stop!!!
Warrent – Ouch Jack. LOL
I wonder how many hair metal acts I’ve actually seen?
Ratt
Def Leppard
Kiss
Bullet Boys
Mamas Boys (am I detecting a pattern here?)
Cinderella
Winger (yeah, yeah make your fun, but it was a good show)
I’m sure there had to be others. LOL
Worst hair metal song evar? I nominate FireHouse’s “Baby, Don’t Treat Me Bad.” Yee-ouch!
I’ve seen:
Bon Jovi (I know, I know)
Def Leppard
Alice Cooper
and:
Stevie Nicks multiple times
Tori Amos
Ani DiFranco
and:
Grateful Dead multiple times
Phish
Widespread Panic
Leftover Salmon
Papa Grows Funk
Galactic
Twangerama
That’s my jam band/New Orleans funk side
And a bunch of others, including some New Orleans JazzFests. But I saw the Dead too many times, and my memory is for shit.
EssBee No worries it was probably in the air at those Dead concerts ;)
EssBee’s on a roll.
I’ve also seen:
Iron Maiden (Thank’s Jack)
Chicago
Styx (Mr. Roboto tour – way cool)
Flash Cadillac (muliple times)
Fats Domino
Dr. Hook (set the way back machine)
Bread
Jethro Tull
Am I the only Deadpanite to make up dirty lyrics for the Boston song “Amanda?”
Rhettro – No you are not the only dirty old man here…
ooh, let’s hear em!
“Im gonna take you by surprise and make you realize,
Amanda
Im gonna tell you right away, I cant wait another day,
Amanda
Im gonna say it like a man and make you understand
Amanda
I love you”
Oh it’s too easy. Above are the line just begging to be bastardized. I think I see justa joe sweating.
See it now!
CP: Killing the Blues – Robert Plant and Alison Krauss
It’d be tough to name all the bands I’ve seen live….. so instead, the hokiest bands I’ve seen:
Whitesnake (with Great White opening)
Scorpions (with Great White opening again – ack. . . Aldo Nova also did a set at that show)
Electric Angels (omg, they were terrible)
Steve Harris’s daughter’s set didn’t sound too impressive. Rhett and I were in the t-shirt line the entire time.
Guns N Roses – saw them with Metallica.
A friend’s band once opened for W.A.S.P.
Hmm, there have got to be others.
CP: Ashes – Ben Harper
Oh, and also went to see the Jackson Victory Tour when I was in 8th grade.
Holy Subliminal message Batman!
I can’t tell you when the last time I heard this song was … but I guess that all this coverage of the Earthquake in L.A. has triggered some synapsis.
CPIMM: “Aenemia” – Tool
CP: Blood – Pearl Jam
“Learn to Swim”
(Kirk Mode) …must try … to resist … song … parody. Force … to …strong. Noooooooooo (/Kirk Mode)
“Im gonna take you by surprise open up those thighs,
Amanda
It doesn’t mean your gay, If you take it the same way,
A man does
If you’ll take it like a man and then your going to understand
Amanda
Behind youâ€
well if nothing else, that cleared my CPIMM buffer
OMG! That was shocking, hilarious, and a little exciting.
hmmmm … that’s what my dates usually write in the comment card I send them home with them.
… that, and “What kind of geek asks his date to fill out a comment card?”
A comment card is a fantastic idea. I don’t know why I never thought of that. Is it essay-based? Or scantron?
Ironic, J0e, that you went from Aenima to that re-interpretation of Amanda.
jOE – Well done sir, you did not dissappoint. :)
It’s a “On a scale from 1 to 5, 5 being best, How would you rate …”
With a section to write general impressions, areas of concern and suggestions.
CP: “Telephone Book” – Violent Femmes
Rhet – no fair. you snuck up on me. Given a few hours I could have done something clever. Given a few days I could have gotten distracted by other things and never gotten around to it, thus letting us avoid this whole unpleasant incident. ;)
CP: “Mr. Bitterness” – Soul Coughing
“areas of concern”!!
CP: Come On In To My Kitchen – Willie Nelson
Jack – “I AM IRON-IC MAN” Doh DA Doh DA DA, DADA DADA DADA DA DA Da Da
(boy … that doesn’t work at all does it?)
“areas of concern†seemed so much more eloquent then “What can I do to reduce the terrified screaming?”
CP: “Race Car Ya-Ya” – Cake
“would you hire this date again?”
CP: Closet Romantic – Damon Albern
LOL.
What?!?!? You mean I don’t always have to hire THEM?
CP:”No Such Thing”(acoustic version) – John Mayer
Ha!
CP: Autonomy – The Buzzcocks
CP: Spanish Castle Magic – Jimi Hendricks
CP: Lonely Years – John Mayall
CP: “King of Kings” – House Of Freaks
So I got to see the season opener of “Mad Men” last night. I WON’T give any spoilers here but I will say I didn’t think it was their strongest effort. Still, I was left wanting to see more so I guess they met their objective.
I’m just not sure that if it had been my first viewing of the show, it would have been enough to hook me.
CP: Livin’ In The Future – Bruce Springsteen
CP: Migra – Santana
CP: Magic – Bruce Springsteen
CP: Transformer Man – Neil Young
JOe, I took everyone’s advice and picked up some of Season 1 on iTunes last night. Now just to find time to watch it in the evenings.
One show that I watch, but am losing interest in for lots of reasons is Weeds on Showtime. Yet I still keep watching — why is that?
CP: I Will Run To You – Stevie Nicks
CP: Holding Hands in the Shower – Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head
Hmmmm ….
Maybe it’s like any long term relationship where the spark has cooled.
You hang in there because you know it. It’s familure, you have it’s back story, moving on means finding something else … and your always holding out hope that what once attracted you so much to it will return.
… um, what were we discussing?
CP: “Control” – Traci Lords
CP: Cry Baby Cry – The Beatles
Traci wants to kiss it and make it better.
I want to let her.
One thing I am really enjoying is rewatching LOST on DVD. I got the first 3 seasons, and am really having a good time with them.
CP: Get a Job – The Greyboy Allstars
Has anyone here run across any wall mountable, wooden storage units for Hi8/Digital8 video tape?
It was hard to type past the word “mountable” while Traci is singing to me.
Traci has a CD?
huh hhuh huh
I typed “Hard”.
CP: “This Love” – Maroon 5
Someone remind me to remove that Traci Lords song from my play list. It makes me stupid.
CP: Midnight in Her Eyes – The Black Keys
EssBee – Yep. Although … I think I would go the “individual track” route with her. (wow is THAT open for inturpretation!).
I’m not so sure her voice holds up without the techno-mix effects.
Still, give “control” a listen when your in that sort of mood. Use headphones. mmmmmmm
CP: “Lie in our graves” – Dave Mathews
“That” sort of mood. Hmm.
CP: Someday – Los Lobos
CP: “If you were in my Movie” – Susan Vega (putting me back in THAT mode)
CP: Judy Is A Punk – The Ramones
CP: Red Dust – Iron And Wine
Control is a good tune. Kinda generic 90s techno.
Talented girl, that Traci Lords. Did she ever do anything else in media?
Does Traci Lords’ music have the same gravitas as music from Dale Bozzio, Samatha Fox or Wendy O Williams?
WNDRWolf: I associate “TDK” with cassette tapes, too.
TSH: Congratulations! My family is in the process of selling their house, too.
Amy Bowen’s Earthquake Report
Yes, I could feel the LA-area earthquake today. I was in the kitchen, helping my mom pack stuff. It surprised us all, and it went on for a long time, too – between 10 and 20 seconds, I think. I got scared and ducked out the sliding glass door to the backyard. You could feel the ground rolling. Very disconcerting, but also kind of cool on some leve.
Jack, I’m pretty sure Traci Lords had a stint as a television actress. Wasn’t she in Stephen King’s “The Tommyknockers”.
That’s “Tommyknockers.” One word.
Scary, Amy! Did any of the stuff you were packing get broken?
Wow, Amy. Glad you’re okay. I’ve never experienced an earthquake.
EssBee: Not that we know of. At that point, we’d closed up all our boxes of breakable stuff and moved on to plastic and other stuff.
I don’t know you go and work a shift and miss all the fun.
I still have a few TDK tapes with copied games on them, doubt they would still work after all this time, heck they were a bit dodgy when new.
+l (lowercase L) to the end of my report.
Welcome home, Van!
That’s great news, Amy! Stay safe.
Friends, I’m heading home for the evening. Have a good one!
As to bands (or individual) I’ve seen performing live and much as I hate to give the impression I wear tweed and hold my ear, some follow:
Don Maclean (of American Pie and Vincent)
Texas
Paul Young (post throat op sadly)
Belinda Carlisle (on the back end of her career)
Cara Dillon
Eric Bibb
Loudon Wainwright III
Martha Wainwright
Kate Rusby
Christine Collister
Billy Bragg
Richard Thompson
Martyn Joseph
Fairport Convention
Steeleye Span
Martin Simpson
Dana and Susan Robinson
Jez Lowe
Bob Fox
Lindisfarne
and a few more I’ve forgotten.
RE: Control
The album is essentially Juno Reactor featuring Traci Lords if I recall.
Has anyone heard Gillian Anderson’s techno song??
http://www.discogs.com/release/65642
1000 Fires | Traci Lords album page.
Oh and shout out to Jack, did you receive an email from me this week?
Got it, Van. . . Just wrote you back.
Amy, thanks for the earthquake report! Glad that it was nothing more than a little scary.
Maybe in the next TDK movie, Batman will face his dread nemesis: Memorex.
The puzzle pieces are going together nicely -
Last call!
Wow. We’re talking about Traci Lords and AMY gets to feel the earth move.
Go figure.
(glad you’re okay Amy :) )
CP: “Shiny Happy People” – REM
Did I ever tell you guys I used to operate a home built seismic monitoring station?
(Why am I starting to remind myself of Baron Von Münchhausen? )
(Let’s just ride this subject into the ground – hehe)

Not that my guess matters this week, anyway ;)
Morning Pan,
this talks of old tapes reminds me of the old video tape ads, one of the most memorable were the Scotch Tapes:

Lifetime guarantee…I wonder if it’s still valid…
Can seeing Johnny Cash really be classed as Cheesey TSHs?
Ok he was in Columbo, but he can be forgive for that.
Possibly some good news for Alzheimers:

I’m keeping my fingers crossed but wish things could be moved along a bit quicker.
Ed From Texas – Yeah Van would probably win it anyway.
+n in the johnny cash post…sheeeesh.
btw, if the sequel to TDK will be taking on Memorex, does that mean we’ll get to see it live?
Could be, but watch out for that new nemesis: The Degausser!
Van Don’t worry we are fluent in typo’s here…
