Morning pan (haven’t got to bed yet akshully),
Watched the 2nd part of the Dr. Who finale and then the Peacekeeper War. Kerry sez: “Both things we watched today made me cry! We gotta watch something funny!”
+p
I wonder if I’m becoming to cynical for these bloody things, no tears watching the Dr Who Xmas special part 2.
Just wondering at the waste of having Timothy Dalton and hardly using him and moving the Master even further away from Roger Delgado’s suave supervillian to a start raving loony.
Ah well, 2010 will see what Moffat can do with an actor that looks like she should be starring in a school play.
stark rather than start..groan
he rather she damn it`all hell.
Morning Pan!
It’s 6:30 in the morning, what the hell am I doing up?
Labyrinth is free today:
http://www.itunes12daysofchristmas.co.uk/
Rather good roll the ball through a maze type game.
Morning Van
*waves at Vanamonde across the ocean*
Ugh! I’m tired of staring at numbers on a spreadsheet. stupid month end.
Morning
!
Two more days off, and then I head to Dallas to work at my new home office for a week.
So far, 2010 has been pretty great, except for my mom’s health.
Have a good Saturday!
Morning EssBee!
I was beginning to think I was alone on the boards today
It’s not easy being alone with your spreadsheets
I think I miss the time stamp, too. I have no idea how long I’m alone in the DP boards anymore.
CW: Dr. Who marathon (again).
We saw The Wrestler last night. Man, what a sad flick.
Hi Bunny!
Ok, off to my Wheel of Time novel.
They are showing Dr. Who tonight here in the arctic.
Since hubby and I are having dinner with friends tonight, I guess that means it will be a couple of days more before we see it.
Hello, World.
It’s 40°F here this morning, but we’ve been promising the kids a trip to the rec center with it’s indoor pool and water slide. So far, 2010 is off to a pretty good start.
I want to go to the water slide pool!
Now that I think about it, I haven’t been swimming in years.
The 12days of Christmas offer is also on the US iTunes store.
Off to see Nine at the cinema…if the trains are still working.
Thinking about taking the kids to see Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.
Saw Brian Bradley at the Comedy Spot last night and as usual, he was hilarious. My face still hurts from laughing. I wish I could share him with everyone.
Morning Cj!
That’s a lot of PS3s:

I suspect JfS can sympathize with this:

anyone here ever considered moving to Brazil?
Is it warm there? Then YES!!!!!
Actually, I’m now off. Got stuff to do before dinner tonight.
Ta!
yes, warm. and far away.
JB – finally listening to this episode (stupid iTunes refuses to find the podcast … STILL)
“They’ll need a crane, they’ll need a crane.
To take the house he built for her apart.
To make it rain, it’s gonna take,
A metal ball hung from a chain.”
http://blogs.howstuffworks.com/2009/12/31/ps3-supercomputers-and-techstuff-gazes-into-the-future/
The TechStuff Podcast did a pretty good show this week on the ins-and-outs of that purchase for laymen…
I’ve long suspected that Sony taking away its support for Yellow Dog Linux on the PS3 (and the announced discontinuation of the Cell processor) was concern over liability. Hard to find a better, easier farm to crack various types of crypto. All the government interest in the Cell just reinforces this in my mind.
And it looks like our snow is going to continue for a while.
I don’t know how many football (or at least “Bowl Game”) fans hang out here at the Deadpan … but can any of you remember a more lackluster Bowl season this one? I can’t recall there ever being such a collection of un-impressive teams and games that I couldn’t care less about.
IMHO – They have “tweaked” the Bowl game process until they have now broken it.
Didn’t watch any of the Bowls, Joe.
Wow, I don’t know what’s going on. I can’t listen to several podcasts. I think blubrry is the culprit.
Well Nine left me non plussed, songs were mostly forgettable even though the acting was good.
Oh and Daniel Day Lewis sings like Jake Thackeray.
For those who’ve never heard of JT:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FE-BKrAAZGc
I don’t really follow college ball, but I definitely preferred when the Bowl games all had silly names, as opposed to silly corporate names. Do they still play the Doritos Bowl? The Enzyte Bowl? The Chef Boyardee Beefaroni bowl?
Ah, gotta love controlled environments. Here’s where we romped today. The starting point for the big green water slice is probably 30 feet above pool level.
http://www.angleton.tx.us/reccenter.cfm
Anyway. I’ve been semi-AWOL of late. I hope New Year’s has been good to everyone. I had a busy but good gluttonous 2 days, consuming in excess. Some of the happy surprises of NYE: Kris and Thomas and Cj and Danthol all showed up.
In lieu of the timestamp, I recommend occasional time posts.
3:17pm AZ time.
OK, I’m off again for a few. Happy 01-02-2010
Ed, you gotta love swimming in January.
JfS is the :meatal: motherfucking :deadpan: guru!
Ooops. Sometimes you wish you had edit. That should have been

If you too want to make big red annoying text in celebration or anger just put these tags around the text
Should have called it Kapla though.
oh, didn’t work.
in “<” tags put div class=”success” and /div after the text you want big red and angry.
Rock on!
The first minute of this video is my favorite scene from this movie.

Shhhh
Actual timestamps!
Timestamps are made of win. They made Cj happy. The timestamps.
Ok, maybe we could do a vote on whether to put new posts at the top of the webpage? would help us that access the DP on our phones/iPod Touches/Android phones..
Scrolling down would mean going back in time..
-25ºF just now, I don’t think there’s any wind, but really the difference between -25º and -30º is not noticeable.
My god, that’s cold!
Today is our last day of vacation. I’m actually ready to get back to work, but wish I wasn’t going to Dallas tomorrow.
I’d be fine with new posts at the top of the page.
Top is teh win.
Morning Pan
I have no voice today, therefor I gave decided I’m going to lay on the couch all day today and veg. I don’t think I’m even going to turn on my computer at all today (the touch doesn’t count)
I’m ok with comments on top. It would make Panning easier when I’m on the couch trying very hard to do nothing
time stamps make me happy.
JFS is made of win.
If therels not an easy way to put some kind of jump to the bottom button, I’m also in favor of new comments at the top. Though, we’d really need the comment box at the top to go with it.
@justa J0e
Agreed on both counts.
There *is* a Jump to the Bottom button, Ed. Simply click “Write Comment” and it rockets you to the bottom.
Still, I’m up for trying comments at the top.
Sweet. Yeah still have to click “Write Comment” but I think that is pretty minor in the scheme of things. Makes it WAAY easier to read and stuff on a mobile phone.
Whoa.
Figuring out what happened made my brain hurt a little.
Then I ate a homemade tamale and all was right with the world.
My work week starts now so … Hope to talk to you all again someday soon.
Will it work with the mobile theme as well?
Ah it doesn’t work with the mobile theme.. Bugger!
Very nice :)
It’s good to be back in Phoenix. :)
Whew, Whiplash!
Nice changeroo.
Something weird going on?
Last post I can see is Vanamonde, December 31st 2009 at 12:50 AM…
oooohhhhhh, I get it…
@JohnBoze
We’ve been hacked!
Errr.
Lo Pan’s brain hurts…… Lo Pan does not like change.
Rhett, good to have you back in town.
So – I don’t know if there’s a way to move this comment box to the top of the page, so it’s closer to the current/recent conversation?
@Jack Mangan
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lo and behold
If so, that would be great, but, at least having the comment button there at the top saves a lot of scrolling. Definitely a nice start to the new Deadpan Year.
Downloading DJ Utopia’s New Year’s set. w00t!
It’s like a slide.
@Vanamonde
I’ll look into the mobile theme.
For the record today I kicked butt and sold stuff to the tune of double my daily quota.
Anyone around to give my a high five for being so
?
(zoom me back to the top, Scotty, so I can check!)
I am easily amused.
Click “write a comment”
Now click “return to top”
REPEAT!!!
wHOA. i’M dIZZY nOW.
@Nomad Scry
It is kinda fun, isn’t it? :)
Checked the mobile skin comments and they aren’t supported yet. They said soon though. I’ll disable it for now unless there are any objections.
It’s like Comment Freefall.
Hi-5 to Cj.
This guy has a lot of time and paper on his hands:
http://www.petercallesen.com/index/A4PAPERCUT_000.htm
Goodnight
Morning Pan, last day of my long weekend, lots of boring things to do.
*High Fives* to CJ!
And, the first workday of 2010 is dawning. Here’s to gainful employment for all this year.
Well done, Cj!
It’s back to work for me — I head right to the airport and Dallas this morning.
Have a great day, DP!
Whoa, was looking at the bottom for new comments this morning and *flip*! Gonna take a bit of getting used to but kinda neat having them at the top.
Whoa, what a trip.
Hi Five to Cj. You kick ass, babe!
That paper cut link was cool.
I was looking at the paper cut link at like 1am this morning thinking “stop looking at the pretty paper and go to bed.” So I did.
Up and at em! I’m taking my daughter for her 6 year well exam this morning. Poor dear has to have blood drawn. She’s cool with it though, but I can’t let her eat so all 3 of us are going to eat afterward – just to be fair. Leaving in about 10 minutes, doctor, then breakfast, then take her to school. It’s her first late. She’s never even been absent. My kid rocks!
The little dude still has one more week off.
Also… because my hubby is awesomesauce, he starts his new job today!
He’s working at the same place as me. He just left for orientation so he can learn how to sell stuff and kick butt!
Ooooh Black Widow is going to be in Iron Man 2 (played by Scarlett Johanssen).
Dan rocks too
Bah humbug.
Congrats to Cj!!!
Is this thing on?
CP: Squealer — AC/DC
@Rhettro
Ah, the comments are on top. Not sure if I like it.
That’s not right! It’s colder here than in Calgary!! This is the worst weather that I can remember around here.
@Rhettro
You get used to it. And it makes it easier in a lot of respects. Then again, I don’t have a cool, shiny, new iPhone or the like. :)
@ditto
Ha! Ha!
@ditto
The site doesn’t look any different on the touch. New comments are still at the bottom meaning you thumb still gets a work out
<Driveby>
Just to chime in on the “Why on earth give James Cameron $500BILLION to make a movie?” question:
http://www.sliceofscifi.com/2010/01/04/avatar-tops-one-billion-worldwide/
I believe the answer equates to “scoreboard”
Now to get back to catching up after the holiday
</Driveby>
lmfao. I’m behind on my tech magazine reading, but I just stumbled on this gem of a sentence:
“Modern memory chips, when powered down, will retain their contents for seconds even at room temperature, and for minutes if they are cooled to the temperatures of a Canadian winter.”
So, Canada *is* bad for security. ;)
Happy New Year, Pan!
On New Year’s Eve, we had a yummy casserole with black-eyed peas, rice, ham, tomatoes, and onions in it. I didn’t drink anything, except some Martinelli’s Sparkling Cider. We went to our city’s old downtown, where they were dropping a decoration that looked like a giant bunch of grapes instead of a ball at 9:00 PM and midnight. We went to the 9:00 grape drop, then came home and baked cookies.
Jack: Cool! So glad you had a good New Year’s. :-)
Cj: *high five!*
Today’s to-do list: Finish fixing up resume (bleah), try to get Audacity working on my computer again (it stopped working last night for some inexplicable reason), work on Questors #9 if I can get it working again, work on Cisco labs from last semester.
Crap. I so wish this wasn’t true:

Yup TEB, have a look down the comments.
cough
You can also switch the mobile theme off TEB.
Star Wars: Episode 1 nearly reached a billion (930 million)for a fraction of what was spent on Avatar. So I still disagree that it was necessary to give ol Jimmy C that much.
Both movies are beautiful to look at but a storytellers nightmare. Both movies prove the world am a dumb dumb place.
Also the score is:
Bronchitis 1
Lo Pan 0
Im sure its the Curse of the Cameron
Ok, who thought it would be funny to give me a paper cut on my nose? The tip of my nose is now bleeding and hurts like hell!
I don’t know if this says more about the the strangeness me or of life in general.
@Lo Pan
The amount of money spent to make the film is irrelevant. Movie companies will spend ridiculous sums of money to eek out any profit. Of course, the higher the profit margin the better, which is why they weren’t worried about Cameron. He’s already doubled the investment, and if the box office numbers are any indication, Avatar is going to keep making bank for a while. People keep going to see it, in much the same way they kept going to see Titanic.
In protest, naturally, I’m planning to watch it on Netflix.
@DJ Bunny
Awe, TEB: We still think you’re strange.
Who knew month end could be so dangerous?
Like I said…people am dumb for the spoonfed fodder.
Ok I generalize and I dont begrudge those who enjoyed. Just makes me scratch my head is all; and worry about what, and how much, is next.
*hacks up lung*
Nice reference to Grand Theft Auto on this weeks Family Guy.
Bunny, were you trying to fold little skeletons when you got the paper cut on your nose?
If I was, I think I was doing it wrong!
Avatar is all about the giant-screen 3D, which is a hell of a lot of fun. If you’ve ever done the 3-D experiences at Universal and Disney, this is a lot like those, except at your local theater. I walked out and said, “Well, I guess that’s the end of the 2-D action flick.”
If only Cameron could have made a story as engaging and immersive as that of Titanic (I know some disagree, but I really connected with Rose and Jack’s experience), then this could have been one of the great cinematic experiences of all time.
God, we are nerds.
I agree. The biggest problem with the movie is that it is completely predictable. It is fun to watch and it is great entertainment, but I don’t think anyone will argue it was a great movie.
And that’s a problem?
This nerd was made for walkin…..
You know movies like Shoot em Up or Crank are just as predictable yet 1000 times more fun than Gravitartar. Maybe its all about creativity beyond looks. Dunno, cant put my finger on it (as Ween would say).
*looks up*
Crank? Really?
*burying nose back in spreadsheets*
Hey for what it was it was fandamntastic. Crank 2 even bettah…
RE: Gravitartar
somebody made a movie based on the old arcade game? Cool
Oh you didn’t mean Gravitar..
It’s not about better or worse. It’s about cash and carry. People are paying to see the film. Paying to get the 3-D experience. A half a billion was nothing compared to guaranteed returns on that investment.
When, in all the time you can remember, has the studio system given a crap about a good story, when awesome effects will pack theatres and make LOTS and LOTS of money?
The programming geek in me approves:

The Postman! Yeah! *hacking cough*
I fucking wish, yo!
What a fun first day to be back in the office. Gee, I can’t wait until tomorrow.

BWAH!
@Jack Mangan
FTW!
I know the feeling. It is the real thing. The essence of the soul.
I think I’m going to have to lodge a complaint with the Canadian embassy – Houston is looking at a high of 34°F this Friday. The rest of you guys must really be hosed if it’s going to get that cold this far south.
Lo Pan decrees high 30′s. Sooooo not much betta
Amy:
I’m pleasantly surprised to find American cities using grapes as a new years symbol. In Spain (and many other countries) it is quite the important symbol for the new year. Were there, by chance, 12 grapes in the bunch that dropped?
From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Year%27s_Eve
Spanish New Year’s Eve (Nochevieja or Fin de Año in Spanish, Cap d’Any in Catalan, Cabo d’Anyo in Aragonese) … It is traditional to eat twelve grapes, one on each chime of the clock. This tradition has its origins in 1909, when grape growers in Alicante thought of it as a way to cut down on the large production surplus they had had that year. Nowadays, the tradition is followed by almost every Spaniard, and the twelve grapes have become synonymous with the New Year.

This afternoon, I not only set up an interview with an employment agency for tomorrow, but while I was at said agency, I ran into and reconnected with an old friend who remembered me from junior high school! Small world!
[/diarytweet]
@Usedhair
Oh, yeah! I knew about that tradition, but I didn’t connect it with our grape drop until you mentioned it. And no, it definitely looked like there were more than 12 grapes in the bunch. Our city only used a bunch of grapes because there is a fairly large area of vineyards and wineries on one side of town.
