Lo, will you come and drive me home so I don’t have to drive in this?
Only if you do the same. This is a bastard
Truly . . .
At least theyre letting me go home early. Oh wait.. no theyre not.
Dammit!
Jack, can we send the Deadpan Snowcat to get them?
Bring warming beers.
I believe Jack keeps it fully stocked and the fuel tanks (it runs on irony) topped off, this time of the year.
Be careful out there. *Hill Street Blues Theme* Seriously, be careful out there, all of you guys in the snow.
J0e, since Deadpan is kinda sci-fi and desert-based, we probably ought to have a Deadpan landspeeder.
I made it home! I sent my people home early . . .
They are saying this might be the biggest documented storm ever to hit the US. Thirty states are affected.
“biggest documented storm”
Zay chekt izt paypas at ze border
Jack – I assumed the landspeeder was just for beach trips.
The trailer to The Adjustment Bureau looks pretty cool.

The Deadpan Snowcat
http://tinyurl.com/5tdr4h9
(don’t worry, it’s bigger on the inside. Besides, it has shag carpet, mood lighting and a mini-bar)
Its alive!!!
I want that snowcat
Come with me
And you’ll be
In a world of
Pure imagination
Is there booze, Willy??
Always.
Don’t drink with the Ompa Lompas though.
They can really put it away.
And all they drink are candy mixed drinks. Too bad they skip the field of jello shots on the tour.
Just don’t follow the two whiny-voiced unicorns if they try to lead you there.
Morning Pan, today’s cheesey fiction quote (from Ansible) is from Angel at Dawn by Emma Holly:
‘Her climax was a nail he was hammering repeatedly’
Have I missed earbuds 2: The Revenge?
Nope. I even have the pairings lined up for the Earbuds Exchange, I’m planning to announce them in this week’s episode.
Goodnight
Ha! Hammering. Ha!
Adjustment Bureau looks spectacular. Reminds me, a sideways glance, of Dark City. I’ll have to watch the trailer again when I get home so I can hear it.
There was an episode of the new Twilight Zone series (the colour series) where a man discovers every second of reality is shepered along by an army of people. I wonder if it was based on the same Dick story as the Adjustment Bureau.
Interview with the Chatbots:

I like me some good…
PKD.
It appears not, based on Theodore Sturgeon story, although considering the similarity in concept I smell a rip-off by on of the old guard scifi writers:
http://postcardsfromthezone.blogspot.com/2006/01/138-matter-of-minutes.html
I remember that twilight zone episode.
Alright, so, which one of youz guyz went a took an icepick to Canada and let all the cold air out?
Here’s a classic that a restumbled upon recently. My daughter thought it was cool, so it is therefore approved for Deadpan viewing. About ten minutes:
http://vimeo.com/17053893
If there is still an unpaired soul in the earbuds exchange, I’ll play along.
Good morning, DP! I’m definitely not going to the office today – man! -45F with wind chill? COME ON!
UH: I think Jack said he’d do a 3way if there were an odd number.
Blizzard2011 TEB’s Revenge?
“3way”
“odd number”
That sounds kind of like a Bond “henchman” doesn’t it?
Odd Number! Go try to kill MR. Bond but fail miserably!
Oklahoma City News: We’re going to pre-empt all regular programming, and national news, to tell you every 5 minutes that it’s still snowing and you shouldn’t be driving.
So tomorrow’s low is going to be 29F. Somebody did leave the door open to Canada.
LR: Same here. It’s the first time I’ve heard the forecast call for 5″ to 25″ of snow.
Gizmodo has some cool pics for the storm too.

I would recommend not getting ‘The Snow’ by Adam Roberts from your local library.

Yay! -3 for a high today.
Yeah… healthcare systems suck. I dont care what country one lives in. Ours just happens to suck lots more than most.
I find it wonderful that Denver is still only around 45% of our usual snowfall. I also find it wonderful that I knoe we’re gonna get our. For shits sake it was 70F just over 48 hours ago!!!

Wow, it appears to be a snow day around here too. I sure hope everyone is well and safe in the real world.
UsedHair – consider yourself IN for Earbuds Exchange of Doom. Or whatever we’re calling it.
Snow job day.
I’ve sent you a friend request on Xbox Live UH, and Cj I accepted your friend request.

Jack’s 411 was a shocker.
Hmm, light day about the pan.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand, the new water heater is leaking all over the floor . . .
Ed, hows the Mrs?
“Fist-hut”
Ed how IS the Mrs???
Jeremy: Only if you buy me drinks fist. I mean first.
*sigh*
Just found out that one of my nephews (23 year old) tried to kill himself last night. Took everything he could find in the cupboard.
This from a sister who heard it over a breaking up cell signal from the breaking up mother who was making the 3 hour drive to the hospital.
Details are sketchy but it doesn’t look good.
meh
Nothing I can do but wait for a phone call … so feel free to provide continued silly banter and distracting geeky links. Or even silly links and geeky banter.
I shall drink this Sam Adams and try to wash the nasty taste of that Black Cherry beer out of my mouth.
Ugh^. So sorry JJ. I personally had a cousin and grandma who did the same thing. Fucking depressing and helpless feeling. Stay strong brother.
PS: I could have told you cherry beer sux ;)
Yeh. Don’t know why I bought it.
Yes I do. I was in a hurry and I had told myself that I WOULD leave with 4 new beers to try and the selection sucked.
ick
BTW: since no one else will repeat it –
“leaking all over the floor”
… and ANOTHER thing.
I’d swear people keep asking -
“Ed, how is Mars?”
My sympathies Joe. I hope for the best.
Mars needs women. If Ed’s lucky then also… *runs*
But for serious Ed, keep us informed buddy!
About to crack open a Great Divide Smoked Porter for the first time. I must say that as breweries go, I trust Great Divide the most at the moment (minus the fiasco that was the Denver Pale Ale).
That sucks Joe, my sympathies.
I actually enjoyed the Sam Adams Cherry Wheat I had several years ago. Though now I wonder if it would be too sweet if I had some again.
The Mrs. is doing well. Had her last injected dose (nothing brings a couple together like syringes….um, where was I?
) – close parenthesis, very important.
Oh, last injected dose of blood thinner. Now she’s just on an oral. She’ll have to go back for blood tests every couple of days until the doctor has the correct dosage dialed in.
We also got her temporary disabled tag. She hasn’t been having to travel much on her own, and I usually drop her off at the door if we’re going somewhere. Now, the tag will come in handy for a few months while she continues therapy.
Not fun times, Ed, but it sounds like everyone is coping well. Thanks for the update. Here’s hoping the positives keep coming.
Justa, sorry to learn of your family stress.
Lindemans Lambic is the only fruit beer I trust.

Well people have always said Amazon has everything for sale.

check out the comments.
My question is why does it have an ISBN number?
I like the last link the best Jack, obviously the octopus is leaving to find a bottle with more beer in it.
I hope things continue to improve for your Mrs Ed.
:-( jj
On LR’s theme of what you can buy an Amazon (this one may have been done before):
http://www.amazon.com/Images-SI-Inc-Uranium-Ore/dp/B000796XXM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1296626748&sr=8-2
Ah, the small wit of the simple minded….
Sorry to hear about your nephew, JJ. Hard situation . . .
Ed, great news, and of course SOMEONE has to say “on an oral” – COME ON.
Frigid here this morning and my water heater needs some maintenance, so I’m home again today staying warm and waiting for the plumber (and workin’).
Morning Pan
Made it through month end. Now to catch up on comments
My usual hugs and well wishes to both Ed and J0e.
I have a friend who’s 18 year old son succeeded in his attempt last year J0e so I know how rough it can be.
Hubby’s off to Edmonton today so won’t be back until late again. Who ever said educators work an 8 – 3 shift never met my hubby.
However, in… news (can’t decide if I should call it good for me or bad for others) the Ontario office is closed today because of the weather. Since I work out of the Ontario office, I effectively get the day off.
Have decided to be good though and put in a bit of month end work. A bit being the key word
My spam mail today says “Hear ladies scream in bed”. I suppose this can either be good or horrifying, depending upon how you look at it *the blood, the blood*
An ad for a chainsaw?
“Fletch re-boot” is the worst thin Ive ever heard. Dont touch perfection.
morning pan, I’m snowed in today so far. At some point they might actually plow the road in front of my house but I still have 3 hours of driveway to clear. the guy across the street has spent 2 hours on his driveway so far and is only 1/2 finished.
The only thing that set “Fletch” apart from every other “guy has to solve a crime” movie out there … was Chevy Chase.
I get the feeling that these knuckleheads somehow think the story itself was somehow a unique and different, classic.
Still no word on my nephew.
“might actually plow”
A good Chevy Chase is all you need.
That’s my feelings on “Fletch” as well JOe, it was a Chevy Chase vehicle.
EssBee: Water woes suck. You have my sympathy
jj: So sorry about your nephew.
jj2: Even if the selection sucks, never settle for bad beer.
Lo: Great Divide and Breckenridge are two breweries that I trust, even if there are a few beers that I don’t like from them.
lr: Sam Adams Cherry Wheat seems to be a gateway beer. A lot of people I know started with that before transitioning to good beer. None of them like that beer now. Their tastes have evolved.
Ed: Glad to hear the Mrs is doing much better.
I think that catches me up now.
OMFG. Grey’s Anatomy is going to do a musical featuring songs that got their break on the show.
GAH! My eyes! My eyes!

So I got an update.
My nephew needs a liver transplant.
He had to wait until about 2 hours ago for helicopter transport to a hospital that can do that because the winds had all air traffic in that area grounded.
He is on a ventilator, but is responsive. There seems to be no apparent brain damage.
Because his damage is self inflicted it will probably have him bumped waaay down the list for a donor liver.
If his parents are determined to be suitable donors AND if the doctors think a partial liver would do him any good, it may be some days before he could even survive the surgery.
FWIW – Some hours after he took all his anti-depressants and Tylenol he had a change of heart and called his dad for help. As it was 3 in the morning AND he didn’t tell his dad what he had done, it never occur to him to take his son to a doctor. Since my nephew had been sick since Christmas with the Flue, Strep throat and bronchitus his dad thought he was just sick again.
In other news, Chicago looks pretty frigid.
Hope those Smartie Hotties are all bundled up!
^ugh. Its too bad he got to the point where he took it first THEN decided he didnt want to go thru with it. Thats tragic, JJ. Wishing him the best.
Hmmmm:

^what Lo wrote.
I hate to think of the permanent harm he’s done himself. Sorry to hear it, J0e.
I’ve had this tab open for many days now:
http://www.slate.com/id/2282086/
Fascinating reading about writing. (but sadly, no octopi or beer bottles).
Ho ho ho, hoop jumping alert..on why ‘Never Let Me Go’ is not scifi:
‘It isn’t science fiction – indeed its procedures are the very reverse of generic, for there is no analogy at work in the text, which instead labours to produce its iterative naturalism as a kind of sub-set or derivation of our own.’
http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/jan/29/never-let-me-go-kazuo-ishiguro?INTCMP=SRCH
Nicked from the latest Ansible.
Wasn’t that impressed with the book myself, and unless desperate, probably won’t watch the film.
I’ve heard good things, but I get the impression we’re not the target audience, Van.
“Kazuo Ishiguro’s unsettling story of a community of clones…”
IT IS SCIFI! :)
The last comment is one of the best:
“Isn’t it amusing how some people need to (re-)define science fiction so that it does not include those works they deem worthy?
Not all SF is about rockets and rayguns; not all SF is about allegory or analogy.”
So true.
You snob ditto! Just enjoy the ray guns and spaceships!!!
*bew bew bew!!! whoop bang bang!*
Put this one in theuniverselaughsatpunyscientists category:
http://io9.com/#!5750073/six-strange-tightly-packed-exoplanets-baffle-astronomers
Aliens? (tongue firmly in cheek)
BTW, my new story release, “Memories of an Undead Sun” – - you know, the one with the cover image of a Flying Saucer? – - is not Science Fiction.
All you can really do is roll your eyes at that kind of snobbery.
I do have a devil’s advocate point, however, just no time to crystalize and properly express my thoughts. I’ll say it later.

Not really sure what I enjoy about this song, but I do.
